My dog has eye discharge and stained fur. How can I treat this?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 9 months old | 32 lbs

I took my dogs to the vet because their undereye was stained I thought because they were tearing up for some reason, he asked me if there was any discharge I said no and he said it could be allergies, but now there is discharge every morning and throughout the day. How can I treat this?

Hello. Other than cleaning the discharge as it appears each day with a little warm water, you can flush the eyes with artificial tears to remove any allergens that may be affecting the cornea. This is not a cure, so if the discharge persists, worsens, or Iker shows any signs of pain or discomfort in his eyes, redness or conjunctival swelling, please see your veterinarian at your earliest convenience. Iker may have mild allergies, but he may also be developing conjunctivitis so do not let it go on too long without following up with your veterinarian. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I am sorry to hear of Ranger's issue. Unfortunately if he has bacteria growing in the eye, he truly will need a prescription for antibiotic eye medication. A compress or an eye rinse (you mention scrub, but I am not aware of an eye scrub and would discourage scrubbing the eye because it could damage the cornea) may help if this is just irritation due to dirt or debris, but if improvements aren't seen within a day, the vet should be consulted. They will put a special stain on the eye to be sure the cornea isn't scratched or damaged, and prescribe medication to treat the issue and make him more comfortable.
