My dog is food motivated. How do I train him without treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Best way to train your dog off the treats. I slowly stop giving him treats after a command. But it seems like he’s not really focus driven when I don’t have treats I try to act amazing so my petting him is the reward but he loves the food more :(

It's a dog thing. Most dogs are incredibly food motivated. Start by trying to get Noble to do a command when you are just around the house or out for a walk. Give him lots of praise for performing the command. Continue using treats when you are in a training session. As he gets older, he will be less dependent on treats for positive reinforcement.
