My dog's toe is swollen, bruised, limping. Broken or sprained?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 months and 10 days old | 43 lbs

My dog has a swollen and bruised toe. She walks on it but limps. Sometimes she picks her foot up and hops, but usually after walking for a while or playing with her brother. Do you think it could be broken or fractured, or maybe a bad sprain?

It would be hard to say without an exam in person and an X-ray to rule out broken toes. Since Ellie is limping and in pain, it would be best to bring her to the vet to confirm what the injury is, and provide her with pain and other medications as needed. Until you can get to your vet, strict kennel rest with leashed potty walks only can help reduce pain and stress to the toe/joint until the cause is figured out.
