My IBD dog won't eat his Royal Canin KO. How to avoid stomach upset?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 15 lbs

Jack has IBD and is on Royal Canin KO formula. He used to love it but like all foods before it, he’s tired of it. It’s the first food we’ve tried that doesn’t give him major symptoms. But at the point it is a struggle to get him to eat. Add ons that got him to eat, give him symptoms within 3 days. Cheese and egg work some, but he usually ends up eating around the kibble to only eat the egg. Meal times are so stressful. What can I do to get him to eat without making his tummy blow up?

I would recommend talking to your vet about different kibble options or additives since they are more familiar with Jack's medical history. Often, using human foods to "flavor" dog food to encourage eating just allows the dog to start choosing what they want to eat. Jack is training you that if he doesn't eat his food, he can have something even more tasty. There are lots of different prescription diets that can be tried if Jack truly doesn't want to eat the KO anymore.
