Why is my cat over-grooming and whining to go outside after coming in?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My cat Friend isn’t being himself. He’s grooming himself like crazy when he’s inside and whines to get out. He stayed outside for two whole days before I had to bring and my other cat in because I saw a dog running loose.

Is he on flea prevention? If not, fleas can cause over grooming and acting strangely. Every cat that goes outdoors no matter where you live should be on flea prevention. If you want him to stay inside more I suggest you make inside more inviting and comfortable for him. I recommend you put some Feliway diffusers in your house and do some environmental enrichment for him. Feliway is basically "happy cat" pheromones and makes them calm and reduces stress indoors. Enrichment makes them more happy to stay inside.
