Why is my kitten wheezing, gagging, and gassy after essential oils?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 months and 7 days old | 2.5 lbs

Hi, tonight my kitten kept doing something that was like a cross between a yawn and a hairball? He'd open his mouth and almost seemed like he might have something in there but it would pass and he'd swallow, kind of like his mouth was dry or he had something stuck in his throat. He's currently sleeping but it sounds like his stomach is gurgling and he's passing gas and very briefly, sleeping, he almost sounded like his breath was wheezing. The other day my roommate ran her essential oil diffuser.

Based on his age I would be very concerned. I don't know if it is related to the diffuser or not. That is not normal behavior though so he should see a vet. I am worried about respiratory disease especially with the wheezing you described.
