My kitten has a 4/6 heart murmur. What should I know and do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 3 lbs

My 3 month old kitten went in for his wellness exam today. we had adopted him (and another 3 month old kitten from a different litter) not even a week ago. the vet diagnosed him with a level 4/6 heart murmur. i was wondering if you could tell me all the information you know on level 4/6 heart murmurs and also what we can do to help. one specific question i had was what would the life expectancy be?

Hi there! We have an article about heart murmurs in cats that may help answer some of your questions: https://www.petcoach.co/article/heart-murmurs-in-cats-what-you-should-know/ Further testing with your vet, as well as a recheck in a few weeks to see if the murmur has changed can help you both better figure out the cause and see if anything needs to be done to try and help. Life expectancy varies greatly on what's causing the murmur to begin with, and if there are any other health issues complicating it.
