What causes a dog to limp with a dry, yellow-tinted paw pad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 91 lbs

My dog has just started limping on her front left paw. When I checked to see if there might be a grass seed lodged in it or something, I noticed the pad was very dry. On closer inspection, I saw that it has a yellow and white tint to it. It has been very hot in our area, but she doesn’t often walk on concrete. The only time she does is to walk across our patio to get to the lawn. It’s a very short distance and is often shaded by trees. What are some possibilities it could be?

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Roxie's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. Keep in mind that there may be something going on with the leg and not the paw itself. I do not think that seeing that color is alarming and not the reason for this. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
