Why is my dog's hind leg kicking uncontrollably when he walks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

My dog, Bailey, a 6-7 year old mutt (we think he has terrier in him, if that helps?) is kicking out his hind left leg uncontrollably when he walks and rests. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain, but he keeps licking the top of his left foot (there’s nothing there; I checked) and is less active than usual.

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Bailey's care today! This is possibly due to leg pain. This can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
