Why is my cat drinking lots of water and peeing on the carpet?

My mothers male cat seems to be drinking quite a bit of water and has twice now peed on the carpet. Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 lbs

I recommend to have Jak examined by the veterinarian today. When cats suddenly start to urinate outside the box, it can indicate a medical conditions such as a urinary tract infection or kidney disease (other causes are possible).
