Should I separate my sick female cat from my rough male cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 5 days old | 2 lbs

Alice has hookworms, which are being treated, and she is anemic. She’s very skinny and seems tired all the time. My male cat is roughly trying to play with her and she screams; he may even be trying to mate apparently. I have a backyard area where the cats hang out. Is it better to put him out during this healing period while she’s ill? I don’t want him to be lonely but she really seems miserable every time he tackles her. What’s the best move? If he goes out, how long till I let him back in?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Alice is already being treated for hookworms and the anemia and she has a treatment plan that is great. I would try to keep her away from him for now as she heals as she needs to rest up to get better. Best of luck!
