My cat's lip is drooping, red, and bleeding. Is it a tooth issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered

HEALTHSHARE Cat has sudden drooping lower lip (right side) for 5 days. Tooth looks OK. But vet said maybe blow to head caused tooth to come down and cut gum and infect? Antibiotics given but lip now worse today with redness and bleeding. Vet said only way to know for sure is anaesthetise cat to examine which seems extreme. Does this look like an ulcer or infected sore in the photo?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like it is due to the tooth causing pressure on the gum causing this ulcer/lesion. I would agree with your veterinarian in that they probably need to sedate or put under anesthesia to be able to better evaluate this region. Then they can treat it accordingly. If it is found to be dental disease, they can correct it then. Best of luck!
