My small dog swallowed Tramadol for a large dog. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltipoo | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 13 lbs

My healthy 6 year old 13 lb dog accidentally swallowed the 50 mg dose of Tramadol we give to our 80 lb senior dog. Can I simply watch him today for any reaction, or do I need to take more emergency measures. Thank you.

He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.
