What to do if my cat's nail is bleeding and split after trimming?

My husband trimmed the cat’s nails today without incident. We’ve never had a problem before. Hours later we noticed one thumb nail was bleeding and split longwise in 3 pieces! We cleaned it with antiseptic. We removed damaged pieces He’s not licking it much and doesn’t seem uncomfortable. What else should we be doing? Pet's info: Cat | Ocicat | Male | neutered | 11 months and 24 days old | 11 lbs
