Why is my 12-year-old bird falling and too weak to crack seeds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | unneutered

My bird had fallen off his porch 3 times today and his break seems weak. He takes a sunflower seed but drops it as though he can't crack it. He is at least 12 years old as that's how long ive had him. He is still squeeling as usual. Does this seem like old age or something else?

Thanks for reaching out about Tex. Does he eat any vegetables or only seeds? Seeds are deficient in multiple vitamins, minerals, low in protein, and this, over time, can lead to weakness and falling. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. If continues to call, remove perches and give a soft towel on the bottom of the cage. Perching requires more energy. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range, to give some support. Good luck.
