My pet rat has weird red dots on his head and body. What is it?

I just noticed my pet rat has weird red dots along his head near his ears, his chin, a little on his face and his shoulders. He does have a cage mate. Both rats are male, about a year of age. I was just wondering what this could be. Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 0.75 lbs

Thanks for reaching out about Templeton and including photos. These lesions seem very similar to dermal lesions seen with mites, a type of ectoparasite. A veterinary visit is recommended, it mites both rats needs to be treated. This has a fairly good prognosis for recovery. Good luck.
