My dog's eye is balding and gunky. Should I worry about mites?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 16 days old | 50 lbs

What is going on with my dog? Her eye is starting to bald, and is producing eye gunk. Whereby the skin on her mouth use to be bleeding, but after applying triple anti bacterial ointment the bleeding stopped and it appears to be healing. Her eye only recently started to bald, after we've been treating her mouth for roughly a week. My questions is what should I do to prevent what looks like an infection from spreading around her eye?

I would recommend having Rosie examined by a vet. This is a common presentation for demodex mites. The vet will probably do a skin scrape to check for the mites and then get Rosie started on an appropriate treatment plan.
