My dog's tail is swollen and limp after swimming. Is it limber tail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 6 years and 7 months old | 85 lbs

My dog is 7 1/2 yr old German Shepherd, Chesapeake mix on Sunday we went swimming and ever since her tail has been hanging and she can’t get comfortable. It’s also swollen. We’ve had this issue in the past and it usually resolved after a few days. Are there any supplements I can give her to make her more comfortable and reduce inflammation for the long term as she is getting older?

There aren't any supplements or OTC medications that will make Stella feel better right now. I would recommend taking her to the vet for some prescription pain medications. It sounds like she has limber tail, or swimmer's tail, and rest and anti-inflammatories are the best treatment. https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/acute-caudal-myopathy-limber-tail
