How to stop my puppy from chasing and being too rough with my cats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 17 days old | 63 lbs

How can I get my puppy (2 1/2 months) to stop chasing and being rough with my cats (3yrs. Old)? My male cat, Rajah, seems like he does want to play with him but my puppy, Koda, starts to bite too hard which causes Rajah to hiss and bite back. Koda also chases them around the house when he sees them on the floor and then whines at them when they jump on the counter or couch to get away.

This will take some time because Koda is a puppy and he thinks he is playing. Here is a helpful link: https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-to-introduce-a-dog-to-a-cat/ make sure Koda has lots of other outlets for energy with lots of daily activity, play sessions, exercise and training. Keep him on a leash in the house at all times until the chasing/rough play phase is over. You may also want to read a few books about dog training. I like the trainer Victoria Stilwell and I recommend to read some of her books. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
