My dog has a red sore on mouth roof near throat. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 5 years and 1 month old | 40 lbs

Hello! I noticed a red sore on the roof of my dogs mouth, near the back of his throat. It’s slightly smaller than a dime. We switched his food up about three weeks ago, and he’s been taking a GNC Pet Multivitamin along with salmon oil for roughly a week.

I am sorry to hear about Duke. If he is eating normally I would monitor the sore daily. It is possible if he is a chewer of sticks and things he could have traumatized the roof of his mouth leading to this sore. If the sore is not getting smaller in a few days or more sores appear, the sore appears raised like a mass, he has decreased appetite or energy level, then a vet exam is recommended.
