My cat has diarrhea from treats. Can it be contagious to humans?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 1 year and 10 months old | 11 lbs

Hi my cat has diarrhoea. He’s an indoor cat and he ripped open a bag of treats plus his food bag last night and today he’s done 5 poos, each runnier than the last. Is that from eating too many treats? He’s in otherwise good form. Also, it may be a stupid question, but if it’s a virus can this be contagious to humans? I’ve naturally been quite close to the poo while scrubbing it (he did them all on the carpet) so I’m concerned I’ve inhaled/ingested it. I used gloves and washed hands thoroughly.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beau. His diarrhea is likely due to the increased amount of treats that he ate. If the diarrhea continues, he will need to see his veterinarian. Sometimes a bacterial overgrowth can develop secondary to dietary indiscretion. This would need an antibiotic to correct. While some diseases can be spread between animals and humans, it is rare. Most diseases such as parasites would be spread by a fecal-oral route meaning, his feces would need to get in your mouth. Basic hygiene would prevent this from occurring. I hope this information helps!
