My GSD barks at strangers and herds kids. Is he becoming aggressive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 17 days old | 50 lbs

My Gsdhas always been friendly to me and my wife and my other dog and his 2 brother cats. He doesn’t like strangers and sometimes barks at them. When we are in public places he always sits proper next to him mom with his ears up. (He sits in between them) I also tied him outside while I was out front me and my wife were cleaning. Kids were outside and he tried chasing after them if they got near. Also if someone is behind us and we aren’t looking he sits between us and them. Will he be aggressive

Sounds like he is attempting to herd the children. That is normal for this breed but yes, this can progress to aggression. GSDs are bred to be herding dogs and they need a lot to do. You need to get him some training now before this gets out of hand. I would recommend a professional in-home dog trainer like BarkBusters. They have a trainer in your area and they do a free consult. You need to be very diligent with training this breed or you are going to end up with a lot of problems. ( https://www.barkbusters.com/dog-training-eggharbor-voorhees )
