How to stop my dog from biting my deaf, blind senior dog at mealtime?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed

How can I help the behavior between my deaf, nearly blind, older dog and my younger dog? My younger dog, Panda, gets very angry when my older dog, Chula, gets near her if she’s eating. Unfortunately, Chula can no longer hear Panda growling therefore continues to stand or walk around her. This leads to Panda becoming aggressive and attempting to bite Chula. Panda has actually hurt Chula about 3 times because of this.

Since it is a situation where you can't really train Chula to avoid Panda since she can't hear or see, I would advise feeding them separately, or keeping Chula in another room occupied with a toy or treat while Panda eats, if the only issue is during feeding time. This can help Panda eat in peace and feel a bit more comfortable, and keep Chulda from getting injured when she can't see or hear very well.
