Cat peeing outside litter box, vet gave shots. What's happening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 months and 12 days old

I took my cat to the vet to check on his UTI problem that causes him to have problem peeing in the litterbox so he tries to pee in other places until he finally succeeds. The vet told me that his renal temperature is normal and his bladder is empty when she checked on him and that she could not give him a certain diagnosis today, but she still gave 2 injections and gave him medical treats and told me to return tomorrow. I just want to know more about the veterinary process that is taking place?

I am sorry to hear about your kitty. Unfortunately there must have been an issue with the photos you tried to upload as we cannot see them. Your vet may have given your kitty medication to decrease pain or inflammation in the bladder. If he does not have an infection, he may suffer from cystitis or inflammation of the bladder which can sometimes be related to stress. You can read more about this at https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951488 and https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951508 . Your vet wants to collect a urine sample to check for things like bacteria, crystals which may indicate infection or stones in bladder, red and white blood cells which may indicate inflammation, and to check the urine concentration which helps us to assess the kidney function.
