Is it safe to give my dog herbal medicine with Diazepam for seizures?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 38 lbs

My dog was having seizures, took her to vet where she stayed overnight and came home once she was 24 hr seizure free. They put her on herbal medicine and it seemed to be working, she had not had a seizure for a month. Yesterday she had 3 seizures in 12 hours so we took her right away and she is being kept on seizure watch. They put her on Diazepam for her seizures. No known cause for the seizures. Is it safe to take both the herbal and diazepam medication?

I'm sorry to hear that Mali is having this issue. I do not know the answer to your question as I do not know the ingredients of the herbal supplement you are giving. This would be a question for your vet since they have her medical history. My opinion is that she should be on a known anticonvulsant medication like phenobarbital if you want any chance at the seizures being controlled. I have never seen an herbal supplement control seizures. I think it was just coincidence that she had no seizures while taking the supplement.
