Dog coughing, low energy, on Frontline. Worried about mosquitoes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 2 months old | 4 lbs

We've been in Croatia for 3 days, there's been lots of mosquitoes since we were presiding near the water, I've been monitoring her and noticed mild cough and decreased energy level, she's on Frontline protection and I was thinking about getting her checked but parents think that those infected mosquitoes are in Africa only. What do I do?

Hello. If you are concerned about heartworm disease, it would take approximately 6 months from the time an infected mosquito were to bite Bella for you to see clinical signs of decreased energy & cough. So, if Bella continues to act well, do have her checked, especially since Frontline does nothing to repel mosquitoes, only fleas & ticks. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
