My dog has green diarrhea and blood. Should I call the vet immediately?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

I woke up and there was green diherrea and blood all over my floor from my dog. I wanted to know if you knew what this could be from or if I should take him to a vet or if I should just monitor him. Photo is after I cleaned up most of the diherrea and some blood.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bandit. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. Blood in the stool can indicate a serious problem. He could have an intestinal infection, inflammation or more serious conditions such as pancreatitis or hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Being such a small breed dog, he will easily become dehydrated from the diarrhea. His veterinarian will examine him and likely recommend fecal testing and possibly bloodwork. I hope this information helps!

Hello, thank you for your question about Mia. Loose stool/diarrhea can be a sign of many underlying problems. It is possible that this could be secondary to GI parasites, ingesting foreign material, or a dietary allergy. Dogs can experience stress colitis leading to diarrhea, but I would not expect these signs to persist for a week. I would recommend submitting a stool sample through your veterinarian to look for any possible GI parasites. Additionally, you could offer her a bland diet, such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice for the next few days. If her diarrhea does not resolve or she develops any lethargy or vomiting I would recommend having her evaluated by your veterinarian. They can discuss the need for other diagnostics such as bloodwork or abdominal x-rays based on the findings of an exam. Hope this helps, good luck!
