My dog hit his dew claw. He's limping. Is it broken or sprained?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 25 lbs

My dog hit his dew claw todays and he let out a small cry when he did it but it didn’t bleed or anything he was limping a little bit but is licking it does that mean it’s broken and will fall off or will it just heal?

If that nail doesn't look broken, it's likely that he pulled at the ligaments and they are sore, but that he won't loose the nail. If he continues to limp tomorrow, I'd recommend a check up for x-rays because it may have damaged other toes at the same time, or may just need a little pain medicine to get him through a minor hurt.

    It looks like the nail has grown into his paw, which would account for the swelling. That nail needs to be cut, and the swelling treated. Take JR into a vet now to have this done. It's not ok he licks it, and that shows it really bothers him. Best of luck.

    It looks like he might have a nail bed infection. You could soak his paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and see if that helps. Otherwise, he should be examined by a vet for treatment. He might need an antibiotic and an anti-inflammatory to treat.
