Dog's ear infection won't clear up. Should I get a second opinion?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 80 lbs

Hello, our family dog has a irritation in his ear for quite some time now. He is a black lab a little over 3 years old. Sometimes it doesn’t bother him a lot but sometimes he has to stop what he’s doing just to shake his head because of the itch. Our vet said that it was an ear infection and gave pills but they have not helped. Sometimes he is a little better right after he takes them but the next day right back to itching. I don’t think the vet is trying hard enough to find answers. L

It could be Brody does have an ear infection, but those are treated with topical medication not pills due to the poor blood supply of the ear. I'd take him into another vet in your area for a second opinion.
