My senior cat with kidney disease is vomiting. Is it kidney failure?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Female | spayed | 5 lbs

My 18 yr old Maine coon has a history of renal disease and her vet did bloodwork and said her kidney values looked good for her age. Her BUN was high 51, ALT 112 presison psl 42, lymphocytes 954 . She looked great and we are giving her Sub Q fluids (75 every other day). We came home from the store and she had thrown up on the rug. It smelled like vinegar. Is she in kidney failure ? Please help ?

Hi there. It's certainly possible that vomiting could be due to progression of her kidney disease, but could also be due to a number of other issues such as a simple upset stomach, or some other illness such as hyperthyroidism or pancreatitis. I would recommend taking her back to the vet tomorrow for a recheck, to see what her lab values look like and determine if any new problems have popped up. Your veterinarian can advise you on what should be done in terms of treatment from there.

Poor Josie! I would make sure she is on an antacid daily. The blood could be just secondary to a little esophageal irritation but it can also be due to stomach ulcers. Since this is the first time you’ve noticed this then I would take her in to be checked out and make sure her kidney values haven’t gotten worse. Your vet may also want to start her on some sucralfate to help coat her esophagus and stomach. I hope this helps.

I'm sorry to hear that Ella has kidney disease, but many cats live for years with mild disease disease. Nausea is very common with kidney disease, so we will common prescribe anti-nausea medications in conjunction with treatment. If Ella is not on fluids, sometimes we will add those in short term to help decrease nausea. If she is difficult to give medication to, sometime we can give anti-nausea medication in the fluids. I would recommend asking your vet about anti-nausea medication and see if that helps her vomiting and increases her appetite. If not, then it might be worth investigating for another disease that may be causing the vomiting. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and that Ella feels better soon. Poor Violet! Vomiting is unfortunately a common problem for cats with kidney disease - your vet can prescribe medication for her to help control this. I would definitely talk with your vet about the problem at your dog's appointment tomorrow to see if she agrees that this would be helpful, or if she recommending bringing Violet in for a recheck and some lab work to make sure that she doesn't have some other problem that could be causing the vomiting.
