My dog mouthed spoiled meat. Is botulism a worry if she swallowed it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 20 lbs

My dog put some very old meat (from outside) in her mouth and tried to eat it, but I got it out before she could. If she did actually swallow a (pea-sized) piece, would she get botulism??

Unfortunately it is possible but Zoe may also be completely fine and not have any problems (especially because she may not have swallowed anything). Rinse her mouth out if you have not already done so and then wash your hands well. Here is a link about the various types of food poisoning in pets: https://www.petcoach.co/article/garbage-intoxication-food-poisoning-in-dogs-and-cats/ Have Zoe examined if needed and please feel free to post any additional questions.
