Is hot pavement safe for my dog's paws if he keeps walking on it?

Do dogs recognize the hot pavement? I just got a rescue yesterday and he loves to walk. I wondered if his paws were hot so I moved to grass to walk on it but he returned to the pavement. ??!

Yes, they can feel it if it is too hot. Some dogs have a higher tolerance for pavement depending on how tough their pads are. If you are worried and he likes to walk on the pavement you can use a product to keep his pads tough. We used this product on the working dogs I took care of in Iraq and Afghanistan - talk about hot pavement! ( https://www.gundogsupply.com/tuffoot.html ) I would not be too worried about him walking on the pavement if he wants to but check his feet regularly for any burns. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I'm a little confused about exactly how fast he's typically going, but as long as he seems to be able to keep up without trouble and gets breaks for water he should be okay. My main concern with pavement is that it can either be too hot or rough on the paw pads so I would plan to check his feet often when you're out and plan to stop if there is any redness. It might be best to avoid the pavement on hot days. There are also boots for dogs available that you could put on him if his feet are getting torn up.
