My dog is limping and won't put weight on her hind leg. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 1 month old | 10 lbs

My 10 yr old Maltese mix missed two steps yesterday going down the steps. She appeared fine at the time. Later she was limping favoring her left hind leg. She didn’t cry when I touched her leg to self examine. And seems to be acting normally. She can walk put won’t put pressure on left hind leg. Help!

I recommend to have Coco examined. When a pet is holding up the hind leg and won’t put weight on it, there is a concern that they have torn their cranial cruciate ligament or that the kneecap is out of place. The doctor will determine the cause based upon a physical exam and may recommend further diagnostics. I hope this helps and that Coco gets back to normal quickly.
