My dog has diarrhea after boarding. Is it safe to wait for the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

Hello, I picked my dog up from a trusted boarding facility. Yesterday around 7am she had diarrhea and it has continued. It has not worsened, the color is light brown, mucus except for once. She is drinking water, and I was about to prepare some rice and canned pumpkin for her to eat. She has not had a full meal since this began. I have the opportunity to see her regular Dr. tomorrow and want to know if it’s ok to wait. I’m a vet student, checked her vitals, they’re good, slightly dehydrated.

I think it is safe to wait. I would do the canned pumpkin and bland food for a day or two. It's likely to be stress colitis, but a quick exam with the vet is a good idea. You can also start probiotics which may help her GI tract get back to normal quicker.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend withholding food this evening (she can have water) and beginning tomorrow morning with a small amount of boiled chicken and rice with plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) for a day or two. If the diarrhea continues or gets worse, I would recommend Penny see her veterinarian. Be sure to bring a fecal sample with you in case the veterinarian would need to test her stool for parasites or bacterial/viral infection she may have contracted at the boarding facility. I hope this helps and best of luck to you and Penny!
