My kitten has a cough and congestion but is active. Can I wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

Approx. 4 month old cat with cough that's worse when waking up and mild congestion(?) For 2.5 days. Still eating, drinking and very active. No labored or fast breathing. Symptoms not worsening. Would it be safe to give her another another couple of days to see if it clears on its own, unless worsening?

Hello. Yes, a watch & wait may be prudent as long as Sundee is not in any respiratory distress, and her activity & appetite are normal. Definitely have her seen if her resting respiratory rate exceeds 30-40 breaths per minute when sleeping, the cough becomes more frequent, or she stops eating, becomes lethargic or anything else concerns you. Hopefully this is a mild upper respiratory infection & it will clear in the next few days. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
