My hamster is scratching, stressed, and has a red tummy. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | 2 lbs

My hamster’s fur is usually clean and neat, until today. His fur was messed up, and he seemed really stressed. He would randomly lay down and don’t move. Also, he would go into his tube and just lie there. He’s constantly scratching himself. His tummy is red. How can we help him?

This is likely to be due either to a mite infestation or possibly an allergy. Intense itch can cause severe distress in hamsters. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately.
