My dog's nails click when walking. How to make the quick recede?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cockapoo | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My dog's nails always make noise when walking. None of the nails touch the ground when she is just standing. Only when she walks. She walks on pavement a lot, so I know it prevents from making her nails grow too long. Even so, she is 2 years old and I have cut her nails only 3 times. Her nails seem a little long to me. But when I look, I can always see the quick. So I can't ever cut anything off. See attached photos. Should I use a dremel and slowly try making her quick recede? Should I ignore?

Luna’s nails look a little long, but not excessive. Some dogs to make noises when they walk simply because of the way that they walk. Certainly you may try dremeling her nails. The difficulty is that she has such dark colored nails and you cannot see the tissue inside. When you are dremeling the nails to attempt to push back the quick, you must dremeling within 3 mm of the quick. This must be done to to three times a week and over time, the quick will recede. You may also try trimming her nails every two weeks. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
