Elderly dog's anal glands leak, losing weight despite Glandex. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 13 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

My elderly dogs anal glands leak 2 - 3 times or more a week, usually when he’s asleep, what can I do to help him. I already give him Glandex but that doesn’t seem to be helping. Also my dog has lost a lot of weight and I’m trying so hard to help him put weight on. You can see his ribs and hip joints bless him, my vet just said to feed him more, I feed him 4 to 5 times a day, and he still isn’t putting weight on, this has been going on for weeks, he’s also on prednisolone, and antibiotics.

It is concerning that Mr Darcy is still losing weight when you are feeding him so much. I would recommend more diagnostics if you are unsure of what is going on with Mr Darcy. If you already know what Mr Darcy has I would resubmit the question and it would be easier to provide you with answers. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
