My cockatiel's crop is swollen and he's grumpy. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Male | 6 months and 15 days old

I’ve noticed that my cockatiels chest/crop area is sticking out/is more pronounced than normal. He is a little bit more grumpy than normal! I’m worried he might have a crop infection or something!

Thanks for reaching out about Charlie. Crop infections or impactions are common in cockatiels. A veterinary visit is recommend to assess and provide a treatment plan. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range for support.. Offer small amounts of water in an attempt to loosen or dilute crop contents. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Rio and including a photo. The treatment depends on the cause, but could include bacterial, yeast or fungal infections, metabolic disorders, obstructions and more. A veterinary visit is recommended for a diagnosis. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range as being too cold with slow the crop motility. Offer small amounts of warm water to soften any remaining food. If resolves, offer very small amounts of food, not allowing the crop to over-distend. See your vet for antibiotic or anti-yeasts recommended. Good luck.
