My dog tore a silica gel packet. Should I worry or go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 5.5 lbs

I just caught Pip taring up a gel silica package. She didn't seem to be eating any of it, just taring the package but all the little bits were loose. I believe most of it it still here but I can't be sure. This just happened right now. She is approx. 5.5 lbs. Should I take her to emergency or should I just keep an eye on her. She seems totally fine right now.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pip will be fine. There are not a lot of balls in those packs and it sounds like she didn’t ingest many. The concern would be if she ate multiple packets at a time. That can cause severe dehydration. Only one pack is safe. Kisses to Pip!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These are actually pretty much non toxic. This should not be of concern when it is the silica gel packets. However, this should not be ingested in large amounts. One for a dog of her size should not be an issue. Good luck and have a good night!
