My cat has FIV. Can I safely bring another cat into our home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Hello - our cat is FIV positive and we are really hoping to adopt another one but we are unsure if we are able to considering her diagnosis. She is a very friendly, laid back cat so we aren't afraid of her biting a new cat. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you understand that any cat you adopt will be at risk for getting FIV no matter what. Many cats do you live in FIV mixed households and never test positive for the disease but it is always a risk. You may look for another cat who already has FIV which there are plenty who need homes. This may be the best solution. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
