My cat got flea spot-on, but I still see fleas. Is it working?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old

I have applied Fypryst Combo spot on on my cat yesterday, on 24th, however, I still combed a flea when I was combing her tonight, will the fleas that jump on her die? Can they reproduce? Will the eggs be able to hatch?

This medication should kill all the fleas within two days of use. If it's not, then I would check to make sure you gave the right dose, gave it properly and did not give a bath soon after applying ( should not bathe for at-least a week after applying). If the flea you combed-out was dead, then all is good. If not, then wait a day, or two and see if there are any live ones. The medication will kill any flea that jumps on her for the next month. However, there is a concern with the fleas reproducing in the environment. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas do reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue. Below is a link to a short article that explains treating the cats and environment for fleas: https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-tips-to-get-rid-of-fleas/ I hope that helps and all is well with Missy.

It will take at least a month before you see noticeable improvement being as most of the fleas are in the environment. Of course it also depends on what flea product you are using as some work better than others. The fasted products are oral products such as Comfortis. Even with the treatment of the house, it will take a solid 6 months of continuously using a good flea product on all the pets before the fleas will be completely gone. Check with the product specifically, but most topical treatments can be used every 2 weeks. You will need to call the company however to verify that it is safe as they are all different. Flea shampoos will generally wash off your flea product so I don't recommend using one. Also watch out for tapeworms as these are spread by fleas. Best of luck with Tabby!

Poor guy. There is a chance the foam shampoo could deactivate the product. Check him over tomorrow and if you are still seeing fleas or if you just want to be sure, you can give him a Capstar (Nitenpyram) pill from your local vet or pet store. This will kill all the fleas off him instantly. It can also be given daily if needed, since it is not a preventative but just an emergency flea ridder and can be given in conjunction with preventatives. Then after 2 weeks have gone by you are good to apply an additional flea preventative (frontline, revolution) on Brian if fleas are still persistent. I would recommend Revolution in cats over Frontline b/c it is more effective. : ) I would also recommend treating your home with a flea fogger purchased from Lowe's or Home Depot. It is important to treat both the pet and the environment in cases of fleas, b/c they multiply rapidly. Best of luck with Brian and I hope that you rid him of his flea issues soon! Take care.
