My senior dog is aggressive guarding his items. How can I calm him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 18 lbs

So, the older my dog gets, the more aggressive he becomes with certain things toward other animals. He's fine with them whenever they're not near his personal items, such as his food, blanket, bed, and toys. I was told by the vet a couple years ago that was normal for his breed, but I'm afraid it's getting a little worse. Is there anything I could do to calm him down a bit more?

First, neutering Freckles can help. I do recommend having that done. Then I would put him in with a professional behavioral expert for training. I never recommend owners work on aggressive issues by themselves due to safety issues. Your vet can make a referral to one for you. Best of luck.
