My puppy is coughing and vet suggests euthanasia. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 22 days old | 2.8 lbs

My 15 week old chihuahua puppy is very itchy, sneezes throughout the day and has a non productive cough. His vet said he is aspirating his food and water causing him to cough but has done no x-rays or tests. He is on his 3rd lot of antibiotics as she first diagnosed an upper respiratory infection. Now she is telling me I need to consider putting him to sleep. I need some advice.

I would certainly request x-rays before euthanasia. A second opinion is also reasonable in this case. There are certainly some dogs born with congenital issues that could cause this to happen. Some of the congenital defects may improve with surgery or special diets. If you seek a second opinion, have the vet send over the complete medical record.
