Why is my dog with acid reflux panting, in pain, and not eating?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 38 lbs

Dog diagnosed w/ pancreatitis, now in control. Also has bad acid reflux all through the day and night. Recently, uti. Blood work good for age. Meds: 40 mg daily of Famotidine (20 morning/20 night). Penicillin shots for uti. Will now hardly eat. Why does he keep producing so much stomach acid; how to stop it? Also, pants heavily on and off during the day, w/ some pain or at least very uncomfortable. This can be before or after eating. Comes on and off like a light switch. What is causing this? TY

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bandit. If he has not already had one, I would recommend having an ultrasound of his belly by a board certified radiologist. This will help diagnose any concurrent problems such as inflammatory bowel disease or something else that is contributing to his symptoms. Depending on his results, a prescription diet may help to improve his symptoms. I hope this information helps!
