Why is my kitten so sleepy, eating less, and sleeping in the litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 3.5 lbs

My kitten is very sleepy lately. He fell asleep in his litter box after using the rest room. He goes in corners and sleeps. Hes been doing this for a couple days. He eats dry food fine in the morning but at night he is too tired and the only way to get him to eat is with wet food. I have another kitten who is his brother and he is much more energetic and interactive. I think hes about 3 months, not sure, we got him bc they were found with no mom. Is he okay? I dont have money for a vet right now

Unfortunately it’s impossible to know if he is OK or not. I recommend to have Geronimo examined by the veterinarian within the next 24 hours. It’s very possible he is sick. You may look into financing options through care credit or scratch pay. You can find information on their website. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chad. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian today. His behavior is not normal. Young kittens can become very sick quickly. He will become dehydrated from not eating and drinking properly. The veterinarian will examine him and try to determine the cause of his symptoms. He may need testing such as fecal or blood work to help reach a diagnosis. He could have a gastrointestinal tract infection, a respiratory tract infection or even a toxin exposure. Based on these results, treatment can be started to help him feel better. I hope this information helps!
