My 15-year-old dog has diarrhea. Should I take her to the vet?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Kiki! The concern I have for Kiki is how long and how much vomiting and diarrhea she has had. Dehydration is a real concern for a dog her size. It is best that she gets seen by your Vet today. They can decide if she needs blood work or X-rays. They can at least give her fluids, antacids, something to stop the vomiting and medication for her diarrhea. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: dietary indiscretion (eating something gross), intestinal parasites, toxins, metabolic conditions (liver, kidney disease), viral and or bacterial infections. If you want to try her at home, I would withhold food for 12-24 hours and water for 6 hours. In 6 hours offer ice cubes or very small amounts of water. If she stops vomiting then tomorrow start "sip and nibble" of a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs of body wait until stools are normal. If she continues to vomit while being fasted or when fo

You should put her on a bland diet (lean, cooked meat with some rice or pasta) for a few days. If she continues to pass diarrhea over the weekend, or if she becomes lethargic or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets or call your emergency service.

Hi and thank you for using Boop by Petco. Given Boomer's older age and the acute onset of the vomiting/diarrhea, I would have him seen sooner rather than later by a veterinarian. Boomer could just have an upset stomach, but he also could have a foreign body, an infection or even a tumor causing these signs. Your vet will perform a full physical exam and determine if any additional diagnostic testing is needed (bloodwork, xrays ) and what treatments he made need. Good luck!

Common causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, ate something outside/human food/a treat that caused stomach upset, viral or bacterial infections, food sensitivity or toxin ingestion. If the diarrhea is bad (accidents in the house, going every few hours) then fast her for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water. Then restart feeding as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic, I like Purina Fortiflora. You can find it online. If the diarrhea doesn't improve by monday she should see the Vet. She may have to be seen sooner if blood shows up in the stool. If he has gone several times in 24 hours, I would recommend a vet visit to determine the cause. They may need to check a stool sample for parasites, or run blood work and x-rays to check for other problems. If not, they can at least get Bojangles on some medications to stop the diarrhea and make him more comfortable. Kisses to Bojangles!

It would be a bacterial issue, parasitic or inflammatory digestive issue. Potentially a diet related problem so best to talk with your vet and they check Jada out and run some initial tests.
