My chihuahua snores loudly and struggles to breathe while sleeping, is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 6 lbs

My chihuahua is about 8 years old and he weighs around 6lbs. He is very active and happy but when he sleeps he snores very loudly and it almost looks like it is hard for him to breathe. I took a video but it won’t let me attach it here, attached is a picture of him. He’s always snored but I just want to make sure it’s okay. Thanks

It is quite normal for them to snore. It is possible that he naturally has a longer soft palate which makes him snore loudly. If he isn't labored breathing and it isn't waking him up, then I wouldn't be too concerned. If you aren't sure, you could always have your vet examine him and watch the videos just to give you a peace of mind. I hope this helps!
