My senior dog coughs when excited. What can I do to help?

I have a 11 year old shih tzu. Yesterday all day and night, continuing today, when she gets excited she starts to hack. No throw up, nothing coming out just seems to be and disturbed bothered throat. Said hacking does not appear to alter her appetite/energy/breathing. Is there a simple remedy to give her to help the cough and continue to watch to see if it persists? Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | unspayed | 11 years and 2 months old | 10 lbs

Poor Chloe! You can put her in a steamy bathroom for five minutes twice a day. Start her on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets as this can help to condition the lining of her trachea. You can also try an over-the-counter antihistamine but you will have to call your regular veterinarian for a recommendation as online veterinarians are prohibited from discussing human medication usage in pets. If the coughing continues beyond two days or if it gets worse, have her examined by the veterinarian.
