Why is my dog chewing his leg bald? Allergies or dry skin from moving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 50 lbs

Aster has been chewing at his leg and made a kind of bald spot. I try to keep him from doing it and there’s no obvious scab or bite or anything that would tell me why he’s so focused on that spot. We moved to California this past January from Michigan. Does he have an allergy now or dry skin or something?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Aster. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian to have his leg assessed. Yes, a seasonal allergy is possible due to you new location. He could also be experiencing an overgrowth of mites known as Demodex. This is diagnosed with a procedure known as a skin scrape. This tends to cause bald patches. In the meantime, you can bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. I would also place an E-collar on him to prevent any further self trauma. I hope this information helps!
